Suicide Prevention

The Suicide Prevention Program provides depression and suicide prevention education to middle and high school students in Licking County. During the 2006-2007 school year, the Signs of Suicide (SOS) program will be implemented. The SOS program is recommended by the Suicide Prevention Resource Center (SPRC) as an Evidence-Based Practice. SOS teaches students to recognize signs of depression in themselves and classmates; discusses the link between depression and suicide; and provides resources for parents.

In Licking County, there were 17 deaths by suicide in 2004 and 19 deaths by suicide in 2005. The goal of the program is to increase help-seeking behavior in individuals with depression, and other mental illnesses to reduce the number of deaths by suicide.
